EVENT: Third Thursdays in Yerba Buena District - 6.20.13

Beginning this June, join us on the third Thursday of each month in downtown San Francisco’s Yerba Buena neighborhood of for a monthly outing full of arts, food, and drink!

  • Wander the blocks around Yerba Buena Gardens to soak in art and music.

  • Pick up a wrist band at participating galleries and museums for special Third Thursday all-night happy hour at participating bars and restaurants.

  • Experience art immersion with special installations, performances, and events

Third Thursdays is jointly organized by A Simple Collective, the Yerba Buena Alliance, and participating organizations, and is generously sponsored by MJM Management and the Yerba Buena Community Benefit District.

The Museum of the African Diaspora's (MoAD) SUMMER SEASON KICKOFF WEEKEND starts with Motown Madness, an exhibition opening event and part of Third Thursdays in Yerba Buena. MoAD's 2nd Floor Salon will be the scene for a live DJ (Craft Spells) featuring Motown beats and background film (Shaft) surrounded by the iconic photographs of Gordon Parks, Life magazine’s first African American staff photographer, and one of America’s finest photojournalists.

On Thursday (6/20) MoAD joins the Contemporary Jewish Museum, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and UC Berkeley Extension Art & Design Gallery along with area bars and restaurants for the first Third Thursdays in Yerba Buena.

The event at MoAD includes the opening of two new exhibitions, J. D. 'Okhai Ojeikere: Sartorial Moments and the Nearness of Yesterday, and Gordon Parks: Photographs at His Centennial. The 3rd Floor (main) gallery will feature the first West Coast showing of the works of J. D. Ojeikere, a Nigerian national treasure whose images focus on preserving cultural traditions in the face of Nigeria’s change from colonial rule to independence.
