FOOD: Corners Tavern (Walnut Creek)

Tried out a new restaurant in Walnut Creek with the boo for a pre-Valentines dinner...

From their website,
Awarded "Best New Restaurant" by both Diablo Magazine and Walnut Creek Magazine and the Design Beautification Award from the City of Walnut Creek.
"Local, laid-back and stylishly casual, Corners Tavern, in the heart of downtown Walnut Creek’s Broadway Plaza, is a restaurant without pretense that features approachable & soulful American food with a unique collection of craft beers, artisan cocktails & distinctive wines. Open for lunch and dinner, with a special weekday happy hour and weekend brunch, Corners Tavern is the perfect neighborhood spot for a night out on the town, a break during a shopping spree at Broadway Plaza’s great stores or a pre-movie bite with friends.
Our contemporary dining room will make you feel right at home. A blend of causally cool design (you won't find any tablecloths or stuffy formality here) and top-notch, professional service, the dining room is a perfect complement to the refined, bold flavors of Chef Escobar's menu. Corners Tavern also features a private dining room for swanky get-togethers and intimate events. Event menus are available upon request."

The ambiance and decor are very well done at Corners Tavern. Sadly, I wasn't as impressed with the food as I thought I would be. The menu reads like everything coming out of the kitchen will be absolutely delicious, and while some of it was, the rest was not exciting. I wanted the tuna tartar appetizer (shown below) but I also wanted the seared tuna entree so I decided to go with the tuna app and the fried chicken entree. (Don't judge me.) And while it wasn't disgusting, the tuna dish was visually pleasing, it just did nothing for me taste wise. So the waiter was kind enough to switch the tuna out for the brussel sprouts and they were AMAZING! Then my meal went back to average when my fried chicken came out. The chicken was great once I peeled back the massive amounts of breading that also didn't taste like much. The mashed potatoes and (minimal amount of) sauteed kale with mushrooms were yummy additions but not enough to save the chicken.

My honey had the smoked chicken wings appetizer and tried the flounder for his entree. He seemed happy, didn't send anything back or complain like me. lol He had a Moscow Mule and I tried the Bright Eyes cocktail. Yummy but a little sweet for me.

With all of that said, I'd go back to give Corners Tavern another whirl and try some other items from their menus. Even if it's just to order drinks and brussel sprouts, and sit outside in the Walnut Creek sunshine during a shopping trip on my day off.
